Newcastle Student Housing Project Approved

Plans to demolish a shopping centre in Newcastle and replace it with a hotel, student accommodation and retail space have been approved. The £70m project is now expected to support almost 1,000 jobs.

Newgate Shopping Centre dates back to the 1960s and comprises a nine-storey hotel building set back from the building line of Newgate Street and two-storey elements which flank either side of the hotel.

The application approved by Newcastle City Council is to demolish all of the existing buildings and build two in their place.
