Historic milestone as eyesore gets knocked down to make way for new campus: Bristol
Demolition of Bristol’s most prominent derelict building got underway today – a key and historic milestone in the creation of the University of Bristol’s new campus.
The former sorting office, on Cattle Market Road next to Bristol Temple Meads Station, is widely regarded as one of the city’s biggest eyesores since the Royal Mail moved its operation to Filton in 1997.
Its removal will make way for the development of the University’s brand new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, as part of the ongoing transformation of the Temple Quarter district …
Rents in Europe’s major cities on the increase
Rental prices in major European cities are on the rise, according to research by housing platform HousingAnywhere.
The HousingAnywhere European Rent Index revealed an upward trend for rental prices in the fourth quarter of 2018 compared to the year before for all major European student destinations. The rental data comes from furnished private rooms, studios and one-bedroom apartments in Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Madrid, Milan, Rotterdam and Vienna …
Steady outlook for purpose built student property in the UK
The purpose built student property sector in the UK is resilient despite uncertainty with the number of space due to be ready for the 2019/2020 academic year up by 25%, new research shows.
This year on year increase in the development pipeline across more than 60 university towns and cities highlights the resilience of the sector, despite wider uncertainties, according to the analysis from real estate firm Knight Frank.
In total, the increase will lift the overall number of purpose built student bed spaces by 5.1% to over 600,000. A further 14,000 bedrooms are under construction or in planning and due to be delivered in during the 2020 and 2021 academic years, although this total may rise as new applications are approved …
Amro buys Seville development in Iberian roll-out
London-based investor Amro Real Estate Partners has bought a site in Seville, marking its second acquisition within its student housing platform in Spain and Portugal.
The deal forms part of the company’s strategy to create a 5,000-bed investment platform in the region.

Chinese firm hails new containerised student blocks at UK’s Newcastle University
A Chinese manufacturer of modular building components today hailed the opening of six student accommodation blocks at the UK’s Newcastle University, built quickly with its prefabricated container units.
Galliford Try, general contractor on Park View Student Village, said the project took two years when building it in the traditional way would have taken more than three years.
Shenzhen-headquartered CIMC Modular Building Systems Holding Co (CIMC MBS) said the scheme is “believed to be the country’s largest of its kind” …
Buyer lined up for £150m student digs in Shoreditch
A consortium of investors is set to pay £150 million for a student housing block in Shoreditch, the Evening Standard can reveal.
Chapter — a venture between Canadian pension fund PSP, US developer Greystar and Germany’s Allianz Real Estate — is in advanced talks to buy a 482-bed property at Paul Street East from Apache Capital Partners.
The accommodation was put up for sale in October. Renters using it pay from £305 per week for a studio, and one-bedroom luxury apartments cost from £485 per week …
Work begins on £18m Nottingham student accommodation development
Contractor nmcn has announced that works have commenced on the £18m Nottingham student accommodation development on Talbot Street
Due for completion in April 2020, nmcn have been awarded the demolition, construction and delivery of the facility, which will comprise of 331 self-contained bedrooms along with communal areas and outdoor space.
The student accommodation development will enhance the local area alongside existing student housing on the city centre street and help to meet the growing demand for student accommodation in the city …
