Developers eye Selly Oak for more than 400 student bedrooms – Birmingham

Applications lodged to build flats on two separate plots of land near Battery Retail Park just weeks after councillors warn of overcrowding in south Birmingham suburb Birmingham’s student accommodation is set to be boosted by more than 400 bedrooms across two developments in Selly Oak.

Separate applications have been submitted to the city council this month to build 329 bedrooms on former industrial land in Elliott Road and 100 bedrooms on a nearby site in Bristol Road.

The area in south Birmingham is already popular with students, particular those attending the University of Birmingham campus in Edgbaston, but has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks for over-development and perceived inconsistency in approving planning applications …
