The first phase of a new £40m student accommodation complex in North Wales will be opened today by the Deputy Minister for Skills.

Wrexham AM Lesley Griffiths will meet Glyndr University students taking advantage of the new facility, based at Wrexham Football Club’s Racecourse ground.

Councillors in Bangor have again stated their concerns over student flats appearing close to the city centre.

The latest application is a renewal of a previous application from 2006 by UPA Developments, which would see the demolition of existing buildings and erection of a new building to provide 24 flats at Neuadd Deiniol, and Wayside on Holyhead Road, opposite Bangor Railway Station.

At a meeting of the city council’s planning and amenities committee this week, town clerk Gwyn Hughes referred to the previous application and recommended that councillors again refuse it …

A planning application to convert the site of an old armed services building into student accommodation has been submitted to Plymouth City Council.

The University of Plymouth owns the partly-demolished Hoe Centre and former Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) on Notte Street.

The Carlyle Group is stepping up its drive into Europe’s fast-growing student housing sector after forming its first UK development joint venture, with a special focus on London’s under-supplied market.

The global private equity firm has teamed up with student accommodation operator Generation Estates Limited to develop four schemes in London, with capacity for about 1,850 beds and an estimated value of about 350 million pounds ($548 million).

“We have been aware of the attraction of student accommodation for some time, given the strong fundamentals of the market, particularly the ongoing supply/demand imbalance in the UK,” Robert Hodges, Managing Director, Carlyle European Real Estate, said in a statement ….

Clapham Junction is set for a student invasion after a plan to build accommodation for young people attending Imperial College was given the thumbs up.

Wandsworth Council’s planning application committee approved a proposal to build 114 studio flats for the students on September 16.

Student accommodation provider Unite Group has awarded a £4m design and build contract to Shepherd Construction for a scheme in Manchester.

Work on the five-storey, timber-framed Arch Bar in Hulme will begin this month.
