Work has started on a multi-million pound student housing development at the Exeter cricket club site.

Midas Construction has been on site at Exeter Cricket Club for a month and has already begun bulk groundworks for the £8million development, which will contain a halls of residence with room for 159 students.

During the project, Midas sparked controversy by demolishing the historical 100-year-old cricket pavilion at the Prince of Wales Road venue, replacing it with a temporary building.

Plans to demolish a former Aberdeen garage to make way for student flats have been branded “exploitative”.

London-based developers McLaren Ltd want to build the six-storey block of flats on George Street, on the grounds of the defunct Uniparts garage.

Under the plans, submitted to Aberdeen City Council this week, the block will comprise of 147 studio apartments and communal facilities on the ground floor. There will also be parking spaces.

Students hoping to live in newly built accommodations on College Lane have been told, less than a month before they were due to move in, that they would have to live in temporary accommodation due to halls not quite being finished in time for arrivals weekend. Most students who will be doing so, have now moved into these temporary accommodations.

The University of Hertfordshire has made significant investments over the past few years to deliver 2500 new rooms and 500 refurbished rooms to College Lane in a programme that finishes in September 2016. Of that, according to Andrew May, Director of Estates at the University, “almost 1500 [new rooms] have been successfully delivered and all 500 have been refurbished.

What we are trying to deliver for this year [September 2015],” May informed UniVerse, “is very very roughly about 1000 rooms.

To date, slightly under a quarter of the rooms have not been finished: “About 770 have been successfully delivered and the remaining 230 will be finished in about a week or two.”

Of the approximately 230 students who do not have their new rooms finished; May stated, “[They] will be moving into the existing halls that we had not demolished… Broad and Coales Halls,” both of which are on the same campus. May said that they were going to stay there for a “week or two.”

However, UniVerse has received prior reports from students , now living in Coales, claiming: “They told me one to four weeks.” …

Metnor Group has built and sold a portfolio of student accommodation properties in Newcastle to one of Singapore’s largest private property developers for more than £40m.

The Killingworth-headquartered property developer acquired the brownfield site in Shieldfield in 2006 and has transformed it into student apartments and retail units.

Metnor Group’s building division, Metnor Construction, completed the first of the four-phase build with a 274-bedroom luxury student accommodation building and two retail units in August 2013.

The second phase, known as Rosedale Court, was completed in August 2015 and is a 338-bedroom accommodation building which includes 4,500 sq ft of retail/commercial space. The building is being managed and operated by specialist student operator South Street Asset Management under its DIGS brand …

Plans for a £73million student and shopping complex at the former Royal Mail sorting office in Coventry have grown by almost 50 per cent.

Barberry Developments originally wanted to create accommodation for 850 students at the site in Bishop Street at a cost of £54m – but now want to increase the number of rooms to 1,200.

Internal work has already begun on the site with the exterior demolition of the building due to start later this month.

Accommodation will include en-suite facilities, communal areas, seminar rooms, TV and games rooms, study rooms and a launderette. The first rooms are set to be available by autumn 2018.

Rob Talliss, director of estates development at Coventry University, said: “The Bishopgate site has been derelict for years, so we’re thrilled to be bringing a fresh new look to that part of the city.

US residential investment manager and operator Greystar has acquired a student housing complex in Diemen near Amsterdam for an undisclosed sum.

The development, the first in the Netherlands to be built in the style of an American university campus, was purchased from a consortium comprising Snippe Projecten, Van Wijnen and Ramphastos Investments, the investment vehicle of Dutch entrepreneur Marcel Boekhoorn.

Campus Diemen Zuid consists of five buildings comprising 939 apartments over 27,000 m2 and around 4,650 m2 of commercial space. The site previously housed 50,000 m2 of vacant offices built in 1978.

Steven Zeeman, managing director of investments at Greystar, said: ‘With our American roots, and having grown a significant UK platform in recent years, Greystar is now focusing on growing further in Continental Europe, particularly urban areas. Revised plans for student accommodation in the centre of Inverness have been submitted after previous proposals were rejected.

The application, lodged by Inverness Properties, involves the demolition of the former Rose Street Hall and nearby two-deck car park to allow the development of a five-storey building comprising 100 student units with shops and a restaurant/café on the ground floor.

The original plans were rejected by Highland Council amid concerns about the height of the buildings, the tallest almost double the size of the Rose Street multi-storey car park, and the loss of 195 car parking spaces.

Although Inverness Properties appealed, the decision was upheld by a Scottish Government reporter.

City building consultant Gary Johnston said the previous application comprised three blocks of flats but this had now been reduced to one.

The new plans have reduced considerably the height of the building, he said. It will be no higher than the buildings in Strothers Lane.

Work has already started on the first phase of student accommodation an eight-storey block of apartments accommodating 105 people in Rose Street on land at the back of the Panasonic Store. Work is due to be completed by September when work would begin on the second phase subject to the revised plans being approved. It is expected construction would take 12 months …

Plans for a cinema, restaurants and student flats in the centre of Durham have been approved.

Durham County Council’s planning committee gave the £30m redevelopment of the Gates Shopping Centre the go-ahead. Objectors including Durham University opposed the plan saying enough student accommodation existed in the city.

Applicants Clearbell Capital said the project would improve the city’s nightlife and create jobs. The company said 23 shops would be refurbished, 35,000sq ft (3,200sq m) of restaurant space created and a new riverside walkway installed. Work is due to start in 2016, with the new centre expected to open in two stages in 2018 …

The site will be built up into a student accommodation development comprising three residential blocks of six, seven and eight storeys. The brick and glass development will have 144 studios and 293 en-suite cluster flats, along with shared facilities and a landscaped internal courtyard.

There could be a future in sight for the former house of famous Oxford photographer Henry Taunt.

Located on Cowley Road, it is currently empty and revamp plans have been welcomed by the Oxford Civic Society,

Property developer Cantay Estates, which owns the house, wants to create student accommodation in the building, also known as Canterbury House.

The group’s vice-president Tony Joyce said: “We have always been concerned that Canterbury House should be preserved as a memorial to his life and very significant work.
