UNITE’s Private Halls Benefit From Student Increase

Student accommodation developer UNITE has reported an increase in rental income for 2009 due to rising university applications, and has plans to acquire more properties in London.

According to UCAS, university applications as of January 2010 were up 22.9% over the same time last year. Particularly large increases are in applications from those over 20 years of age: the 21-24 age category saw a 44.8% increase, and applicants over 25 increased 63.4%.

Applications have been increasing since 2007, however previous increases have been between 6 and 7%. The current economic climate is thought to be the major driver behind this year’s large jump, encouraging people to apply to higher education in order to make themselves more attractive to employers when the economy and job market pick up again …
