Councillors back plans for Garthdee supercampus – Aberdeen

Robert Gordon University is to build a £170million supercampus in Aberdeen after councillors unanimously gave their backing to the plans yesterday.

The major expansion will see all of the university’s academic activities moved to its campus in Garthdee. An “iconic” 130ft tower is to rise above a large new teaching building, courtyard and main entrance for the campus beside the River Dee. It will create 377,000sqft of extra teaching space, as well as new student accommodation, staff facilities and parking spaces.

Mike Berry, the university’s director of estates, said: “We’re delighted that the next phase of construction has been approved. Detailed planning approval of the new teaching and learning building is a further positive step in the university’s ongoing plans for the development of its Garthdee campus.” Work on the expansion will be carried out in two stages, with the first to move all staff and students who are currently based in the city centre to Garthdee by August 2012 …
